PdC Area Boating Guide

Nestled on the banks of the majestic Mississippi River, Prairie du Chien, WI, offers an idyllic setting for fishing enthusiasts, party-goers, and cruise lovers alike. Pool 10 of the Mississippi River, stretching from Lock and Dam No. 9 to Lock and Dam No. 10, is renowned for its diverse aquatic life, vibrant nightlife, and scenic river cruises.

Pool 10 is a haven for anglers, attracting fishing enthusiasts from all over the country. Its diverse habitat, rich with an array of fish species, makes it an ideal destination for fishing year-round. Common catches include walleye, sauger, northern pike, catfish, and smallmouth bass, among others. Grab your fishing gear and head to the shores of Prairie du Chien, WI, or venture by boat to on of the endless backwater sloughs to find your perfect fishing spot. There are many ramps to choose from on both sides of the river, and getting a launch pass is easy. Pick up a daily or yearly pass at Kwik Trip, Cabelas, City Hall, Piggly Wiggly, BP North or the Police Station. Passes cost $7/day, $15 annual for residents, and $30 annual for non-residents.

If fishing isn't your thing, pull off to one of the many sandbars along the river or slip into a cove to tie up to other boaters for swimming, music and fun. One of our favorite spots, Gilligan's island is a hotspot on nice days for boaters to congregate. The "island" usually has some sand on the South side, and always has plenty of shallow water to keep cool. Get there early if you want sand access! (see map, SW of #32 on the Main Channel)

There are also many waterfront bars and restaurants along the river offering stunning views, refreshing drinks, and delicious local cuisine. Whether you prefer a laid-back atmosphere or a livelier scene with live music and dancing, the river around Prairie du Chien has something to suit every taste.

If you don't have a boat, but want still want to experience the enchanting beauty of the Mississippi River, consider a riverboat cruise. Maiden Voyage Tours out of McGregor offers day and evening cruises to take you along the scenic waterways around PdC. These cruises feature narrated tours, where you can learn about the area's history, wildlife, and natural wonders - and on the weekend nights, the cruises have live music!

Another option for accessing the Mississippi, is to play captain for a day by renting a boat! Pontoon, jetski, lilypad and daily slip rentals are available across the bridge in McGregor, IA at the Nauti Marina.

And if motorized boating isn't for you, kayak and canoe rentals are offered across from the Prairie Marina and Washington Park (400 N Main street). Fishing poles and life jackets are available as well in 2 and 4 hour increments! Go get on the river!

Detailed maps of Pool 10 including access points are available below. Save them!
